Shooting Star is first and foremost the story of a woman trying to reclaim her shattered identity. Joal Jacoby has an enviable life; a loving husband, a doting mother, a caring boss and best friend. One phone call unravels that tidy world when she is summoned to the bedside of her critically ill mother, whose dying declaration stuns her. She is the adopted daughter of a murdered prostitute with an entire family she’s never met. Only by uncovering the essential truths about the mother she never knew can she put some kind of stability back into her life. These are richly drawn characters who weave an intricate plot from a sleepy town in Indiana to the energy of Vietnam. The desperation of some of the unsavory characters drives the narrative to its inevitable conclusion. Joal puts her life back on track by solving a murder and claiming her place in a family she never knew existed.
